Day1. BALTRA – NORTH SEYMOUR
Morning arrival to Baltra Island by TAME flight and
transfer to the dock to board the Liberty yacht. Onboard
registration. Welcome introductory briefing and lunch.
Afternoon disembarkation (dry landing) to North Seymour
Island for a walk along the coast and the interior of
the island, observing bird colonies of blue-footed boobies,
frigate birds, swallow tailed gulls and also sea lions
and marine iguanas. A shorter walk is also available.
Welcome Cocktail offered by the Captain. Naturalist's
briefing on the next day's activities and dinner.
(Thursday) Day 2. SOUTH PLAZAS ISLAND - SANTA
CRUZ – CHARLES STATION
A visit to South Plaza, one of the smallest
islands and only 130 metres wide and 800 metres long.
Here there is a large colony of sea lions, with over
1,000 occupying the smooth rocks. The small cactus forest
is populated by land iguanas, where they can be seen
sunning themselves or feeding on Opuntia pads and fruits.
Along the cliff edge, nesting swallow-tailed gulls are
the predominant seabirds, along with tropic birds.
Continue onto the second largest island in the Galapagos,
Santa Cruz. With six different zones of vegetation:
Coastal, Arid, Transition, Scalesia, Miconia, and Pampa
Zones. The Charles Darwin Research Station and the Galapagos
National Park offices are also based here. The station
is also a tortoise breeding centre, where tortoises
of different species are prepared for reintroduction
to their natural habitats. The most famous inhabitant
is probably Lonesome George, the only survivor of this
specific turtle species. The lush green scenery of the
Santa Cruz highlands is a welcome contrast to the aridity
of the lower islands.
(Friday). Day 3. ESPANOLA ISLAND
- GARDNER BAY - PUNTA SUAREZ
After breakfast, disembark (wet landing) at
a white coral beach where you can take a short walk
and watch the sea lions, mockingbirds, finches or enjoy
the beach.. There is great snorkelling in this area
(snorkelling equipment is available for all guests),
or ride the glass-bottom boat around Gardner or Tortuga
islets. Afternoon dry landing for an exciting walk on
lava terrain to visit its unique sea bird colonies,
including the Waved Albatrosses (May - December) and
the famous blowhole. A shorter walk is also available.
For those not planning to walk there will be a panga
(dinghy) ride along the coastline of Punta Suárez.
Naturalist's briefing and dinner.
(Saturday). Day 4. FLOREANA-
PUERTO CORMORANT - FLOREANA - POST OFFICE BAY
After breakfast, disembark at Point Cormorant (wet landing)
for an easy walk to see the flamingos that inhabit a
brackish-water lagoon, and other birds such as ducks,
stilts, sandpipers, etc. There is great snorkeling from
the beach or near by, at Champion Islet or the Devil's
Crown. Those who do not snorkel can enjoy a ride on
the glass-bottom boat. Lunch on board.
(Sunday) Day 5. ISABELA ISLAND
– PUNTA MORENA – ELIZABETH
The Island of Isabela is so large that its surface covers
almost half of the land of the Galapagos archipelago.
Situated at this island is the Punta Morena, a young
volcanic landscape with numerous fresh-water pools at
which Flamingos, Bahama Ducks and other birds unite.
About 40 kms from Punta Morena you will find the mangrove
bay Bahia Elisabeth with little islands off-shore. Here
you can see dwarf penguins as well as schools of manta
rays, turtles and as well as whale-sharks.
(Monday). Day 6. ISABELA ISLAND
– URBINA BAY - FERNANDINA ISLAND – PUNTA
ESPINOSA
Urbina Bay is an easy wet landing on a gentle sloping
beach. This area is very interesting in that it is a
perfect example of the geological activity of the islands.
In 1954 over 3 miles (5 kilometers) of the marine reef
at the edge of the shore were uplifted by 13 feet (4
meters). Fernandina is the youngest and most active
volcano in the Galapagos with eruptions taking place
every few years. The flat lava of Punta Espinosa offers
a stark and barren landscape, but here flightless cormorants
build their nests on the point, sea lions sprawl on
the beach or play in the tide pools and marine iguanas
dot the sand.
(Tuesday). Day 7. SANTIAGO – PUERTO EGAS - BARTOLOME
Today, we take a small path from the visitor center
at James' Bay on Santiago Island passing the ruins of
a former salt mine and seeing along the way sea lions,
lizards, herons and fur seals.
Bartolome is a small island that has beautiful white
sand beaches, luxuriant green mangroves and a colony
of penguins. Activities will include swimming and snorkeling
and a climb to the summit of the island for one of the
most breathtaking views in all of the Galapagos. From
the summit you will have the best view of the often-photographed
Pinnacle Rock. The beaches at the foot of the Pinnacle
Rock boast some fine snorkeling spots from where you
can discover the marvelous underwater world with a good
chance to encounter penguins or softly gliding turtles.
(Wednesday). Day 8. CALETA TORTUGA – BALTRA
The panga will take you into a tidal lagoon to see three
kinds of mangrove plants, red, white and black. White-tipped
sharks, spotted rays, mustard rays and Pacific marine
turtles frequent the waters here. Return to the airport
for your return flight back to the mainland.
